Thor:Ragnarok (2017)

This show was so much fun to work on and a pleasure to work with Andrew Hellen and Dan Bethall. Many beautiful backgrounds to create matte paintings for and it was also a show I learnt a lot from.

There were some shots that are deceptively more challenging than others but we learn more from those. In the arched corridor sequence which in the plate we see Chris, the FG pillars and a green screen background blocking out the floor. This sequence was sent directly to DMP department for us to flesh out how the BG could look like that plays into the story’s environment. We did many DMP iterations which mostly had to be thrown out. So I decided to go back to the basics by submitting a render of greyscale blocks shot with a virtual camera of the same focal length as the plate. Which actually really helped us see that this had to go through the proper channels of layout and lighting approvals. Which made DMP a breeze afterwards!
